The idea of Chunky Salsa was conceived many moons ago by the founding members, David Javier and Suzi Biniecki.

Hailing from Peru, David had played for many years in Latin American bands and wanted to continue his passion in Australia. Upon meeting Suzi, the two began to discuss their dream of creating a Latin American band in Newcastle to meet the needs of local dance groups. While others had tried before them, no-one could muster up the right mix of talented, spanish speaking musicians all in one place. The challenge was made public and musicians were gather all over to take on the task.

Pretty soon the lineup was in place, and by March 2009 the practices began. With not all musicians being from Spanish-speaking backgrounds, the practices proved to be cultural and linguistical mixes for everyone involved. But they all loved a challenge, and it didn’t take long for the set lists to form.

Within 2 months Chunky Salsa had their first gig - then the phones started to ring! Chunky Salsa had struck a chord with the local dance scene and everyone wanted a taste of their unique flavour. From parties to weddings, dance socials to corporate events, Chunky Salsa is helping to bring a new style and sound to Newcastle and Australia!
